This scan is rarely indicated and only usually performed between 18-36 weeks’ gestation in pregnancies undergoing intense monitoring due to concerns about fetal growth or fetal anaemia (low blood count).
What is the purpose of this scan?
Measure the blood flow between the baby and the placenta (umbilical artery Doppler) and/or distribution of blood flow in the baby’s body (middle cerebral artery and ductus venosus Doppler)and assess the amniotic fluid volume to evaluate fetal wellbeing.
Use this information to help inform the safest intensity of fetal monitoring and/or determine the optimal timing and mode of delivery of the baby.
Rarely, to diagnose fetal anaemia (low numbers of red cells) in pregnancies at risk of this condition.
The results of the scan are available immediately and will be discussed with you and, subsequently, directly with your obstetrician if any urgent intervention is required. If more detailed counselling is required, it may be necessary to schedule this at a later date or at the end of the clinic, where possible.
