The routine second trimester fetal anatomy scan is optimally performed between 20+0-22+0 weeks of gestation. A detailed fetal anatomy scan can be requested outside of this window but views may be limited at earlier or later gestational ages. By undertaking the scan by 22+0 weeks, this also allows more time should any additional investigations be recommended.
What is the purpose of the routine second-trimester scan?
Assess fetal growth and amniotic fluid volume
Exclude major structural fetal defects detectable by ultrasound at this gestation
Assess placental position
Screen for preterm labour (by ultrasound measurement of cervical length)
Screen for pre-eclampsia (if not previously performed in first trimester) by ultrasound assessment of blood flow in the uterine arteries
What does it involve?
A consultation.
An ultrasound scan (transabdominal + transvaginal ultrasound).
Where does it take place?
The consultation, ultrasound scan and blood pressure assessment take place at OneWelbeck Women’s Health
How long does it take?
Approximately 60 minutes for the scan and consultation
When are the results available?
The results of the scan are available immediately and will be discussed with you at the time and subsequently with your obstetrician directly if any urgent intervention is required. If more detailed counselling is required, it may be necessary to schedule this at a later date or at the end of the clinic, where possible.
